During her tenure Principal of Lakeside School, Mrs. Merollo was a driving force behind key initiatives that led to the school exiting comprehensive support and improvement (CSI) in 2024, being named a National School of Character in 2024, and becoming a National AVID Demonstration Site in 2025. She also successfully secured a grant for the STAR Academy and oversaw curriculum and instruction for grades 6-8. Pittsgrove Township School District is thrilled to announce that we’ve received a $59,028 Trees for Schools grant to help us transform our campuses with native trees!
🌳 What’s Happening?
In 2026, we’ll be planting more than 100 native shade and evergreen trees across the high school and middle school campuses, including:
· Shade trees along driveways for cooler, greener spaces.
· Evergreen wind barriers between campus and neighboring fields, plus along tennis courts.
· An outdoor classroom at the middle school—a natural space for learning and gathering.
These new trees will help create a healthier, more beautiful environment for our students, staff, and community while supporting climate action goals.
We are absolutely thrilled and honored to receive the Trees for Schools grant,” said Mrs. DuBois Trembley, Superintendent of Pittsgrove Township School District. “This project perfectly aligns with our commitment to growing all learners to thrive. By involving students in every stage—from planning and planting to caring for these new trees—we are creating a more beautiful, vibrant campus and powerful, hands-on learning opportunities that will last for years to come. We look forward to seeing our school community grow alongside these trees and to helping our students develop a lifelong commitment to caring for the environment.”
This exciting project is possible thanks to the Trees for Schools program, run by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Sustainable Jersey, and The College of New Jersey, with funding from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Statewide, round two grants will plant over 4,500 trees at schools and colleges, building on last year’s success of nearly 3,000 trees at 33 campuses.
As Sustainable Jersey’s Randall Solomon shared:
“The Trees for Schools grants make local sustainability real, practical, and achievable…We look forward to working with these schools to expand their tree canopy and provide students with rich educational opportunities and a vital connection to nature.”
Planting is scheduled for Spring 2026!
We’ll be working closely with the South Jersey Land & Water Trust to engage students in planning, planting, and caring for these trees—and to make sure learning about the environment is fun, hands-on, and lasting.
Stay tuned for more updates as we grow greener together!
